Purpose Slams differ from `open mike` sessions in that they are designed for audience enjoyment. Limiting performance to three minutes produces a sharpness. One of the best things about a slam is the range of performers it attracts. On any night you may hear heartfelt love poetry, searing social commentary, uproarious comedy routines and bittersweet confessional pieces - it could be traditional or modern verse, unaccompanied song or rap - anything goes, poets are free to perform in any style on
Services So what's in it for the poet? Winning a slam requires some measure of skill and a huge dose of luck as what is popular with an audience one night might not get their vote next time. This keeps performers active, writing new works and refining old ones. There's no winning formula but Word Wizards provides a regular platform for experimentation, practice and experience. Introducing factors such as performance technique and audience mood means that the `best` poem may not always win, but as the Word Wizards slam motto puts it: -
The points are not the point - the poetry is the point.
